All Mankind Will Be Brothers |
|
Beethoven's 9th Symphony will be split into pieces. Different artists will receive clips(mp3 format - probably 30 seconds to 1 minute long). They will recreate those clips in whatever way they deem appropriate. They will send me their recreations along with a band name and a track title. I will put it all together and post it on the web. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail me so I can get the ball rolling by giving you access to your clip.
Rules
1. Unfortunately, the recreations can't be too much longer than the original piece due to the length of the whole work. I'd like to be able to fit it on 1 CD(in case we decide to put it on CD for some reason).
2. From the date that I make the clip available to you, you have exactly 1 month to complete your work. If 1 month passes without the completion of your work, the clip will be assigned to someone else. This will ensure that this thing gets done in reasonable time.
3. Don't send requests for specific clips
Interested? E-mail me!
I will send a list of participants to those who express interest and make the clips available in a few days.
Feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested.
Thanks.

I will be updating this page with the latest info.
The due date for your piece is Dec. 15th.
I am giving a little over a month in order to make sure you have time to get the clip from me.
Here are the best ways for me to send the clip to you 1. e-mail (just let me know if you'd like it by email and I will send it right away) - the files can be up to about a meg in size
2. (SEE EMAIL ABOUT FTP SITE)
This will only be running during the day. If you try to login and it's not working, you should try again during the day.
3. I can ftp or transfer the file to you in some manner. Just let me know.
Thanks. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have problems obtaining your clip.
Now, as for sending me the final product, I'd prefer to receive wav files at the above ftp site under the uploads directory. If that is not possible, just let me know and we can work out something.
Things to keep in mind
1. volume level - The clips may seem like they are at an extremely low or high volume level. The piece itself has a tremendous dynamic range. If you were trying to recreate your clip perfectly(I am not saying that you should or shouldn't do that), you would need to maintain the volume level.
2. spaces - The spaces that exist in your clip, especially at the beginning and end are there because they are there in the piece itself. I did not append or remove any space from any clips. When I reassemble the clips, I do not intend to add or remove spaces. So again, if you were trying to duplicate the clip perfectly, you would need to include the same leading or trailing space as present in the clip.
3. play it by ear - I realize that sheet music is available for the symphony. I would prefer greatly if you did not use sheet music to compose your piece. The idea is to just listen to the piece and decide how to recreate it. I don't really have much interest in people plugging sheet music into a MIDI program and spitting out a note for note rendition of their clip...though I guess if you wish to do that, I will not stop you.
4. context - The pieces are cut at certain points intentionally. They are supposed to remain out of context. It would be best if you did not listen to the whole symphony to find your piece and hear what goes before and/or after it. I realize that some people may already be familiar enough to know what is before and after and that is ok.
5. density - Some of these clips are extremely dense. Don't feel overwhelmed by that. No one has a symphony at their disposal(well, no one that I am aware of). Just recreate it in whichever way suits you best.
Thanks for participating and I hope you all enjoy it.
We still need 47 more artists to complete the 79 clips. If we cannot get artists quickly, I will allow people to do more than 1 clip. If you'd like to do more than 1, let me know after you complete your first one and I will assign another to you.
I will do my best to get this whole project done within a few months time.
ninjA
Note: The idea is not really to remix the clips, but to recreate from other sources.
We are piling on artists, but we still need a bunch more. Please pass the word on to your friends, enemies, and mothers.
I have been asked the same questions a few times...so I figured I would send a short e-mail to everyone.
My real vision of this project is for you to recreate the clips provided to you without using the clip itself as a source. I am not going to place an absolute restriction on that, but the goal was more a recreation than a remix. Still, if you really need to use something from the clip as source material, I have provided uncompressed wav files of the clips on the ftp site for you.
If you are having problems getting your clips, please let me know so we can immediately remedy the situation.
I really look forward to hearing everyone's work.
